ROSEFLASH! GOOD NEWS: BAD NEWS -- PRICES FOR ROSEBUD SUBSCRIPTIONS STAY THE SAME -- BUT BOOKSTORE PRICES FOR ROSEBUD GO UP!

PRICES FOR ROSEBUD SUBSCRIPTIONS STAY THE SAME--

BUT BOOKSTORE PRICES FOR ROSEBUD GO UP!

Bookstore prices of Rosebud are going up for the first time in several years.

Starting in April, 2006, the over-the-counter price of Rosebud will rise from $7.95 to $8.95 in the many Borders, B& N, and other chains and independent bookstores around the country. If you subscribe, however, or order current or sample issues through the mail, or through PAYPAL on our web site at www.rsbd.net, the prices will remain the same—and we will pay for shipping. CLICK HERE TO SUBSCRIBE AT THE LOWER PRICE.

The rise in store prices is long overdue. Its cause is the rise in our costs, and the difficult of retaining a bookstore presence nationally at a "break even" level. So many middlemen get a slice of the Rosebud you buy across the counter, including distributors, chains, bookstores and shippers that we are lucky to get $2.00 back on the sale of a $7.95 issue.

This puts us barely over the production cost of our magazine, given our small, high quality print run. To break even we must have a sell through of about 45% on a given issue—which means we have to perform on a much higher level than most commercial magazines in order to make a profit. On occasion we have even lost money after putting thousands of issues on the book shelves. Last year, in spite of our finest efforts we went a little in the red. This year we hope to recover. Nonprofit Rosebud is almost totally reliant on you for its sustenance. We survive on subscriptions, single issue sales and donations. We are a totally independent journal with no parent institution, foundation, or deep pocket.

This spring we will be thirteen years old as an independent nationally distributed, high quality literary journal. To stay that way we need your support. If the price rise is too high for you, please order copies by mail—just $7.95 each with free shipping, checks to be made out to Rosebud. If Rosebud is till too expensive for you—check and see if it is available at your local library, or email me at jrodclark@smallbytes.net and we will work something out. Our only goal is to continue producing our magazine as long as our limited resources allow, and to continue to serve readers and writers everywhere.

Sincerely,

Roderick Clark, Managing Editor
